"The issue of shale gas divided Parliament today in plenary. Unfortunately, the amendment that I co-signed, calling on the Member States not to authorise hydraulic fracturing, was rejected by the European Parliament: the 262 votes in favour were not sufficient. However, hydraulic fracturing currently poses many unsolvable problems. Moreover, the Tzavela report, which presents shale gas and the US experiences in an extremely positive light and which I voted against, was in fact adopted. The only silver lining is that the Sonik report on the environmental impacts of shale gas and shale oil extraction activities obtained a large majority. It calls for a ban on hydraulic fracturing in sensitive areas. It notes that although every Member State has the right to determine its own energy mix, all states should have stringent rules on all exploration techniques, especially hydraulic fracturing. Taking the precautionary principle as its basis, Parliament therefore calls for legislative progress and recognition of the environmental impact of shale gas exploration. I welcome the adoption of this report, although we must continue to be vigilant given today’s contradictory votes. The battle continues!"@en1
