"This report adopted by the European Parliament has been the focus of much attention. I also voted in favour of this text because I feel that it is well thought out and consistent. It notes that it is up to the Member States to decide whether or not to allow shale gas exploration and acknowledges, for example, the French and Bulgarian moratoriums. Exploration is only possible, however, if the European environmental legislation, such as the Water Framework Directive, the Air Quality Directive and impact assessments, is fully respected. The European Commission is requested to determine as soon as possible whether this regulatory framework is sufficient or whether it needs to be strengthened further in order to provide better protection for European citizens. The text also contains information on the benefits of shale gas in terms of Europe’s energy independence and competitiveness."@en1
