"Before commencing shale gas extraction it is necessary to fully assess the side-effects this will have not just on nature, but also on human health. Furthermore, we need to ensure a fair and level playing field across the Union and the strict implementation of the requirements of EU safety and environmental protection laws. It should be noted that there is as yet no firm conviction that the technology used for shale gas extraction is sufficiently safe and will not cause major and painful ecological disasters involving the chemical pollution of drinking water, the treatment of waste water, seismic effects and possible greenhouse gas emissions."@en1
