"I voted in favour of the report by the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety on the environmental impacts of shale gas and shale oil extraction activities. The report emphasises environmental considerations and an investigation of the long-term consequences for the environment, water, air, etc. I also voted in favour of the motion indicating the importance of protecting groundwater and of prohibiting extraction in sensitive and threatened areas. The Member States themselves will decide on the extraction of their own energy resources, but at the same time I voted in favour of urging the Member States not to license new activities as regards hydraulic fractioning in the EU. This is with consideration to the risks and the negative impact on the climate, environment and health, as well as loopholes found in the EU’s rules on the extraction of shale gas. It think it is important to point out that the extraction of shale gas and shale oil, which is a fossil fuel, entails great risks for human health and the environment. I would prefer not to see any extraction at all, but rather continued efforts in terms of energy efficiency and renewable sources of energy."@en1
