lpv:translated text	"I thank the rapporteurs for their reports. The development of shale gas offers the opportunity to reduce our dependency on energy imports. We would appear to be in agreement on that point. There are differing views, however, as regards the necessary controls and the acceptable risks. I believe we cannot afford, at the present time, to ignore an alternative to fossil fuels. It is essential to carry out unbiased studies and research, discussing and quantifying the opportunities and risks with openness and honesty. In my view, the development and use of shale gas are possible provided that stringent environmental conditions are imposed. The technology is developing very rapidly and we should not be left behind."@en1
