"As we witness an unprecedented phase of deindustrialisation, with one redundancy plan after another, it is time to undertake structural reforms to return to growth. It is vital that we give a sharp boost to the competitiveness of our small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which account for 99 % of businesses and 70 % of jobs within the EU. Several levers are available to us to help us achieve this goal, and in my view we must use them all at once if we want to make up the ground we have lost. First of all, we must continue to reduce the administrative burdens on businesses. Considerable efforts have been made in this regard, but I think that we can go further still, particularly with regard to very small enterprises. It is also imperative to improve loan activities to benefit the real economy and help to mobilise private capital to support our SMEs. These firms create wealth and jobs, and should be able to benefit from reasonable interest rates. Finally, I would insist on the need to reduce the tax burden, which weighs too heavily on our businesses. These three proposals should ensure secure and flexible entrepreneurship, which is vital if we want Europe to remain a region of production."@en1
