lpv:translated text	"The concept of ‘citizenship of the Union’ introduced by the Treaty of Maastricht has the objective of consolidating and strengthening the European identity and at the same time allows European citizens to participate actively in the European integration process. The feeling of belonging to the European Union is an extremely important factor in outlining and defining civic participation, which can enhance the degree of collective identity, on which the future of the Union depends. I welcome the Commission’s decision to make 2013 the Year of Citizens and I think that this approach will give new impetus to the debate on citizenship. It will put the exercising of citizenship rights in the centre of the political agenda."@en1
