"Mr President, as has been said, this is an appalling tragedy – 34 killed and ten prior to that, including police officers – but I think it is a symptom of how difficult it is to make the transition from a culture of violence to a democratic situation. For that reason, we probably have to look at it in the light of what we have seen in other countries. Nevertheless, obviously all human life is sacred; any death is terrible, and murder in particular has to be condemned.
I think there are three things we can probably do at European Union level. At a higher level, we could help the government to make sure that the growing wealth of South Africa is distributed fairly. Secondly, we could put pressure on the business community, in particular, to ensure that the companies involved carry out their social responsibilities. Also, the trade union leadership internationally could help rival trade unions to conduct their businesses according to international trade union norms."@en1
