"Mr President, extreme poverty, high socio-economic differences between the vast majority of people who live in poverty and the small wealthy elite naturally generate social tensions in South Africa. The events at the Marikana Lonmin mine, which happened in August this year, provide direct proof of this.
The violent and brutal crackdown by police units taking action against striking miners cost dozens of lives and dozens more were injured. The large-scale arrests of miners led to widespread protests by miners being held in other areas as well.
The fact that the Lonmin mining company failed to engage in dialogue with its employees on working conditions in a civilised manner suggests that multinational corporations operating in this country do not appreciate human labour and do not seek to provide decent conditions for their employees.
Our requirement for a thorough inquiry into these events, as well as access to justice for victims and the right to compensation, is the absolute minimum of what we need to accomplish."@en1
