"Mr President, measures to recognise and defend the quality of certain agricultural products are positive and undoubtedly play an important role in raising production value and thus producer income, informing consumers and promoting healthy eating habits. However, quality schemes cannot be a panacea for solving the multiple problems that are facing agriculture and the rural world today, especially in less developed regions.
Under the continued liberalisation policies and the deregulation of markets for agricultural products, it will be very difficult to ensure the continuity of many high-quality productions, with great relevance for the cohesion of the rural economic and social fabric. The same can be said about the continued policies that crush the income and purchasing power of the general population. Both kinds of policies must be changed."@en1
