"I voted for this motion for a resolution, given that the relationships between the European Union and the parties must be founded on respect for human rights and democratic principles, which must guide their internal and external policies and form an essential element of the agreements. With regard to the blockade of the Gaza Strip and the humanitarian crisis there, I believe that, in line with countless appeals from the international community, the immediate, sustained and unconditional opening of the border crossings must be arranged to enable the flow of humanitarian aid, goods and persons to and from the Gaza Strip, as reiterated in the Council conclusions of 14 May 2012. Ending the conflict is a fundamental interest of the EU as well as of the parties themselves and the wider region, and it can be achieved through a comprehensive peace agreement, based on the relevant UN Security Council resolutions, the Madrid principles including land for peace, the Road map, the agreements previously reached by the parties and the Arab Peace Initiative."@en1
