"Article 225 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union states that ‘the European Parliament may [...] request the Commission to submit any appropriate proposal on matters on which it considers that a Union act is required for the purpose of implementing the Treaties’. I consider the smooth running of the internal market and the development of the social market economy directly related to the provision of a universal, high-quality banking service. I am voting for this report, which argues that all Europeans should have access to basic banking services, thereby contributing to solving the problem that 7% of the adult population – around 30 million people – do not have any service of this type."@en1
