".
I voted for this resolution because I am a great animal lover and I think that an EU-level legal framework would help provide better protection for pets and stray animals. As a member of the Committee on Petitions, I am aware of the concerns which European citizens have about the bad treatment these animals receive in some cases across the European Union. There is usually adequate legislative provision at national level. However, local authorities, which are mainly responsible for managing these issues, encounter difficulties in implementing it, including due to the lack of necessary funds.
This is why I feel that a European legal framework would not only help harmonise measures and practices at Member State level, but it should also provide a way of supporting the efforts of the responsible authorities regionally and locally."@en1
