"Mr President, Commissioner, ladies and gentlemen, I am delighted with this debate this evening on access to basic banking services, services which must be made available at the lowest possible price, or even for free. This is essential for their accessibility.
Today, around 30 million people do not have access to basic banking services in Europe. How can we save these people from exclusion? It was on the basis of this question that I tabled a recommendation on the subject in my report on the fight against poverty, which was adopted in 2011, underlining the fact that the inability of people living in poverty to make use of basic banking services is a considerable obstacle to their re-entry into the labour market and reintegration into society.
We therefore need an initiative to combat exclusion in order to rebuild our citizens’ confidence. Let us stop letting the banks contribute to social exclusion!"@en1
