"I believe that intellectual property rights must be afforded better protection, including in the online environment. However, this must not be done, under any circumstances, by infringing fundamental rights, as is happening, unfortunately, in the case of ACTA. The agreement blatantly infringes at least three fundamental rights, namely, the right to protection of personal data, the right to privacy and the right to confidentiality, which is also the clear conclusion from the opinion of the European Data Protection Supervisor. If ACTA were to come into force, it would force Internet service providers not only to monitor users’ entire activities on a large scale, but also to pass on possible irregularities detected to the holders of intellectual property rights. These measures are not only excessive and disproportionate, but are also illegal as they create a private system of law enforcement where the service providers and rights holders are the police and judges in cyberspace, to the detriment of the judicial authorities. For these reasons, I believe that ACTA is unacceptable in this form and must be rejected by Parliament."@en1
