"Mr President, it has been said here that we must not bow to pressure from the street, but I say it was precisely the people on the street who returned us to Parliament. We represent their interests. If millions of young people are angered by new and unjustified legislation, we cannot ignore their protests. In my opinion, there is a need for clear legislation which protects intellectual property rights at international level, legislation which protects the creators of intellectual property from ‘pirating giants’ like China, the source of 60% of illegal goods. However, the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement is not the answer. Instead, it imposes misleading provisions – provisions which have also mobilised three million citizens to present a petition on ACTA to the committee on which I serve. I am also surprised by the words of Commissioner De Gucht, who seems not to recognise Parliament as a colegislator, saying he intends to ignore our decision to reject ACTA.
I would therefore like to remind everyone that it is Parliament which appoints and dismisses the Commission. I hope tomorrow that we will finally lay ACTA to rest."@en1
