"Madam President, we acknowledge and respect fully the need for artists to be protected and to be compensated for their genius and the challenges posed by current technology when it comes to achieving this. However, we must not accept and cannot allow basic fundamental rights in Europe and the rest of the world to be eroded. The European Union – and I must emphasise this – has established very high levels of protection for fundamental rights and the European Parliament must be in the front line of efforts to maintain those high levels, for the benefit, as always, of European citizens. It is precisely within this spirit that we arrived in our opinion at the conclusion that ACTA is not compatible with the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union, especially in light of its ambiguity. We therefore recommend that the House reject this ambiguous agreement. However, I would like to underline this: rejection of ACTA should not mark the end of the affair. It should mark the beginning of proper public debate involving all interested parties, in order to arrive at a modern social agreement and regime for protecting intellectual property rights."@en1
