"We Swedish Conservatives voted against the own-initiative report on eCall today. The purpose of eCall is to make it easier, via computerisation, for the emergency services to get to the scene of an accident quickly. The intention is for it to be possible to trace vehicles that are involved in road traffic accidents. If an accident happens, it will be indicated at the nearest public safety answering point, wherever you happen to be in Europe. However, this service already exists on the market. Several car manufacturers already make cars with this service included. We therefore believe that the EU does not need to take a decision on this. Installation of eCall would involve increased costs for motorists, as cars would be more expensive to manufacture. It should be up to individual motorists to choose for themselves whether they want this service in their cars and therefore to pay for a more expensive car. From a privacy perspective, this also means that motorists can be monitored. If someone chooses this system as a consumer, it is a voluntary contract between the customer and the company. However, if it is decided upon by the EU, then it forces monitoring on people, which is something that we Swedish Conservatives did not feel able to support."@en1
