"I voted in favour of this report, which urges the general introduction of the eCall in-vehicle emergency call system in the Member States. This public device automatically contacts the emergency services in the event of serious accidents, reducing the death toll, the severity of injuries and the number of secondary accidents. We have been supporting this idea since 2003, but it has been hampered by the manufacturers’ lobby, as they wanted to develop an optional, private system. What we have here is a truly public European system, a major advance in road safety that now only requires a legislative proposal from the Commission."@en1
