"Madam President, female genital mutilation is so horrific that it is almost beyond words. Nearly three million women are subjected to this each year. That is more than 8 000 women a day, 240 women every hour or five women during this minute that I have at my disposal for this speech.
It is difficult to imagine the pain involved in this. The statistics are extremely depressing. According to the data, 180 000 girls in Europe are in the risk zone for being subjected to this barbaric practice. It is now high time the world acted to get a global ban on female genital mutilation in place. This ought to be the common foreign policy’s number one priority within the area of human rights. It is also the aim of this resolution. Many of us who have signed this resolution were involved in ‘The Vagina Monologues’, which was performed here in the European Parliament earlier this spring. This is further proof that the fight against this abuse reaches beyond party boundaries, across countries and beyond ideologies. It is now time to put a stop to this barbaric practice."@en1
