"Having taken part in the working groups engaged in laying the foundations for a common energy policy, under the guidance of the previous President of this House, Mr Buzek, it is only natural that I support this own-initiative report on energy policy cooperation. If the European Union could coordinate energy purchases, including oil and gas, and represent the buyers in dealings with third countries, it could get much more favourable terms and more guaranteed supplies. The important point is that the decision to grant the EU such a role must be made independently by the Member States, which, under the Treaty, are entirely responsible for energy supply. Ensuring reliable and competitive access to energy supplies is fundamental for Europe’s competitiveness and for maintaining the best possible bargaining position with regard to third countries."@en1
