"We urgently need to adopt a strategic approach to ensure that we have a secure, sustainable and competitive energy supply. The depletion of the EU’s internal fossil fuel resources is going to increase its dependence on energy imports, despite increasing input from renewables, energy efficiency and research on energy technologies. I am in favour of a common external energy policy, based on solidarity. We must increase our diversification and rethink our strategic cooperation with the main energy producing countries. Ensuring security of supply for the European Union would enhance the EU’s capacity for foreign policy action and its credibility as a global actor, including in the field of climate change."@en1
