"A few months after the end of the European Year of Volunteering (2011), Parliament has almost unanimously adopted a report on volunteering, which has a wealth of findings and proposals.
I am pleased that a number of my amendments have been included and, in particular, the one reiterating the call for a European Statute for Associations after the Commission’s lengthy silence on the matter, and the call for the concept of grants to associations to be clarified in order to sustain the funding of associations, who are often the first victims of budget cuts.
I have one regret: that the vast majority of MEPs rejected the proposal to abolish visas for volunteers. There is always the same ridiculous anti-immigrant obsession, when Parliament had no intention of imposing any obligation on the matter. We should be pleased that the opportunity of relaxing these visas has still been maintained."@en1
