"The very essence of Europe must be solidarity. It was only natural to accept Italy’s application to mobilise the EU Solidarity Fund following the flooding which affected the regions of Liguria and Tuscany in October 2011. This disaster caused severe damage to residential homes, businesses and agriculture, and the disruption of major transport links and essential public infrastructure networks. By way of a reminder, the total direct damage caused by the flooding is thought to amount to over EUR 700 million. The floods have been qualified as a natural disaster and therefore fall within the scope of the Solidarity Fund."@en1
