"The floods which hit Liguria and Tuscany in October 2011 caused severe damage to residential homes, businesses and agriculture and the disruption of major transport links and essential public infrastructure networks. My own country has been affected by similar disasters on more than one occasion, and I am therefore aware of how much damage may be caused to agriculture. Both farm animals and crops are at risk and if they are lost, then farmers may suffer a major drop in income. Regions hit by floods rarely manage to overcome their problems alone. Funding is needed to ensure that these areas are revitalised as soon as possible. One of the reasons why the European Union was founded was to help those who need it most, to increase levels of prosperity, and to ensure stable development. Allocating money to such assistance under the Solidarity Fund is a very good way of meeting these objectives."@en1
