"The European Globalisation Adjustment Fund (EGF) was established in 2006 to provide additional support to workers who are suffering from the consequences of major structural changes in world trade and to assist their reintegration into the labour market.
The scope of the EGF was broadened for applications submitted from 1 May 2009 to include support for workers made redundant as a direct result of the global financial and economic crisis. As we are currently facing a serious financial, economic and social crisis, with the increase in unemployment standing out as one of the main consequences, the EU must respond using all means available to it, particularly as regards supporting people who are out of work.
I therefore supported this report’s position on mobilising EUR 1 631 565 from the EGF for Spain, in order to support 876 workers made redundant from 146 enterprises in the leather and related products industry in the region of Comunidad Valenciana."@en1
