"Mr President, ladies and gentlemen, information and communication technologies (ICTs) can make a significant contribution to the development of the economy and society. However, to make the most of these potentials, first they need to be made secure. The many disputes regarding existing legislation on data privacy and intellectual property rights enforced in the Internet environment should give us much food for thought.
I supported Mr Kalfin’s proposal because I believe that the potential offered by the web, in terms of both innovation and growth for European enterprises, must not be lost, especially in a highly competitive context such as currently exists at global level. Nonetheless, I want to emphasise that I believe in the need for a rapid implementation of the European programme for critical information infrastructure protection (ECIP), including the creation of the Critical Infrastructure Warning Information Network."@en1
