"During the vote in the European Parliament today on a common system for a financial transaction tax, I chose to vote against the report. It is very surprising that a majority of the Members of the European Parliament supports the financial transaction tax (FTT), which is championed in the report. The views of the groups and the Members have changed dramatically over the last year. The idea that an FTT would bring in money which would, to a large extent, resolve all our economic problems has become entrenched and seems almost to be a parody. It is important to remember that Sweden tried out a Tobin tax and it proved to be damaging, because the transactions moved outside Sweden. Obviously, it is also important to emphasise that the cost of the FTT would be paid by ordinary consumers and that economic growth would be inhibited."@en1
