The environmental damage which lasts for decades, linked to the lack, in many ships, of a double hull which would prevent crude oil leaking out, is today unacceptable. It is therefore vital for all oil tankers which still have a single hull to be fitted with a double hull or equivalent design intended to eliminate or minimise an oil leak in the event of an accident.
