"Mr President, we all seem to agree on the fact that Europe needs growth. I guess all of us know that growth comes through investment and positive capital flows. That is why I am very sceptical about the proposal on the table. I am one of those who are convinced that this proposal will hamper growth, and that is the last thing we need in this situation.
I understand all of those who call for taxes on the financial sector. Some have pointed out that the financial sector does not pay VAT, etc. That is true and that is why we need to look at intelligent ways of taxing the financial sector, but this proposal that is on the table is not an intelligent way of taxing the financial sector. It is the last thing we need in the current financial situation.
Symbolism in politics might look good in the eyes of the electorate but, in this case, simply doing something symbolic without a fiscal impact on Europe will actually have a negative impact. That is something which even the Commission’s own impact assessment showed."@en1
