lpv:translated text	"I endorsed the report on women and climate change. Research shows that climate change is not gender neutral and that it affects women and men in different ways. This is confirmed by the International Panel on Climate Change in its 4th assessment report of 2007. Women make up 85% of people who die as a result of climate change and 75% of environmental refugees. The level of fatalities caused by natural disasters is higher among women – over 70% of the victims of the tsunami in 2004 were women. Research on climate change should therefore give greater attention to the issue of gender. I would like to draw attention to the situation of women in developing countries, who are bearing the brunt of climate change – ubiquitous gender inequalities mean women and girls are disproportionately more at risk from its consequences. The traditional division of roles and discrimination against women reduce their ability to adapt the way they live to changes in climate. The effects of climate change will lead to long-term consequences for gender equality. They exacerbate inequalities in access to wealth, land, new technologies, education and information – factors which play an essential role in the fight against climate change. I appeal to the European Commission to develop aid programmes which address the situation of women. Women should have a greater role in developing adaptation strategies."@en1
