In the present, difficult circumstances, our main goal in trying to modernise our higher education systems must be to stop them falling behind higher education elsewhere in the world. It is a sobering fact that only 200 of our 4 000 higher education institutions rank among the top 500 of the world, and of these, few are from Central-Eastern Europe. European higher education must do better. More generally, improvements throughout higher education are necessary if we are to maintain, and perhaps even raise, Europe’s global competitiveness."@en1
