"Although the situation regarding human rights in the EU is good, I do not think that we can rest on our laurels. The European Union supports the efforts in combating racism, xenophobia and other kinds of discrimination based on religion, gender, age, disability or sexual orientation, with particular attention being focused on respect for human rights in the area of asylum and immigration. With the aim of promoting human rights worldwide, the EU finances the European Instrument for Democracy and Human Rights, which has a budget of EUR 1.1 billion for the 2007-2013 period. The initiative finances not only projects devoted to gender equality and child protection, but also supports joint actions taken by the EU and other organisations involved in defending human rights, such as the United Nations, the International Committee of the Red Cross, the Council of Europe and the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe. Based on what has been stated above, I think that the EU must remain a major player in this area."@en1
