"The specific legal status of the outermost regions enshrined in the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union clearly states that they must be treated in a differentiated way, in order to take into account their geography and their unique structures. The consequences of the economic, social and financial crisis have affected all EU regions, but have hit the outermost regions particularly hard, thereby accentuating even further the structural shortcomings of their economies and their dependence on the outside.
European investment in these regions does not only involve a policy of recovering from backwardness and of compensation: it also seeks to create the added value necessary to address the sustainable development and competitiveness challenges facing this region in particular, and Europe in general. I am therefore voting for Mr Teixeira’s excellent report, which is intended to contribute actively to finding a more balanced European response to the challenges facing the outermost regions in the context of the Europe 2020 strategy. To this end, there is a need to pay particular attention to setting out and implementing cohesion policy, as well as to establishing a renewed EU strategy for the outermost regions."@en1
