lpv:translated text	"The Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia was signed by the original members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations in 1976. Its purpose was to promote peace, stability and cooperation in Southeast Asia. While the treaty was originally designed to apply only to states within the Southeast Asian region, it was amended in 1987 to allow for states outside the region to accede to it. In July 2006, EU Member States agreed to initiate proceedings towards the accession of the EU to the treaty. I naturally voted, therefore, in favour of our accession to this treaty of friendship between our two regions."@en¹
