"Madam President, ladies and gentlemen, I would like to remind the House, for which I have great respect, that Armenia is the oldest Christian country in the world, older even than Georgia. However – and we need to say this clearly – of all the countries of the Southern Caucasus, it is in Armenia that Russia currently wields its greatest military, political and economic influence. All the same, we should keep our fingers crossed for this country, which is moving along the rough, hard, rugged and sometimes uphill road to democracy. Let us hope the forthcoming parliamentary elections become a kind of watershed on that road. The European Union should support these efforts. In terms of its culture and other aspects of its civilisation, Armenia is part of our European heritage. This is all the more reason for us to support this country."@en1
