"Mr President, I would like to appeal to the President on behalf of the human rights activist, Abdulhadi al-Khawaja, who has now been on hunger strike in a prison in Bahrain for 69 days. He is doing this in protest against the king’s dictatorship and against his detention and torture. What was his crime, you might ask? It was to fight for democracy and human rights – not with violence, but with words and peaceful demonstrations. After being on hunger strike for 69 days, Mr al-Khawaja is on the verge of death. This must not be allowed to happen. His fight must be our fight. Therefore, I would call on the President to ensure that an urgent appeal is sent from the European Parliament to the King of Bahrain. Mr al-Khawaja must be released immediately. Every day counts, and tomorrow might be too late."@en1
