"Mr President, Baroness Ashton, ladies and gentlemen, I would like to thank the Vice-President for her clear words and join many others around the world in welcoming April’s parliamentary elections in Burma as a very significant step towards democracy.
Over the past decade, the international democratic community, including the European Union, has insisted that a policy shift was desirable, necessary and urgent, particularly for the people of Burma. I prefer to see this not as a political concession to the current authorities, but as a promising start to a process which should be focused on improving the political, economic and social situation in the country and its role in both a regional and a wider context.
Such a development would strengthen people’s hopes for the future of Burma, enable the lifting of sanctions and stimulate international support for democratisation and economic progress. I suggest that we monitor closely any progress made by Burma in this respect."@en1
