"Mr President, Baroness Ashton, a tragedy is taking place in Syria and the suffering of the people there is shameful. Kofi Annan has done what he could as a mediator. Will plan B be enough? No, it will not. As long as the members of the international community, and China and Russia in particular, fail to make it clear to President Assad that he must go, because there can be no lasting peace while he and his close circle of murderers are in power, then Assad will continue to slaughter his own people until he has nipped any form of resistance in the bud. We must be aware of this. Anyone who believes that it is possible to negotiate with Assad and his thugs is, unfortunately, deceiving themselves.
The Turkish Prime Minister, Mr Erdoğan, is absolutely right in calling for more aid for refugees in the border region and even for the establishment of an aid corridor, which, as we all know, can only be put in place with the threat of armed force or even with military action. No one here wants to see the situation escalating or the outbreak of war. How long can we, the international community, continue to stand by while people are murdered? We need a plan B, because the six-point plan will not work. Unfortunately, this plan B is not yet in place."@en1
