Over the past few years, Montenegro has made several efforts and has laboured with determination to gain membership of the European Union. The country must be an integral part of the enlargement process and we must provide it with all the necessary support in this. The country is well on its way to fulfilling the Copenhagen political criteria, and has delivered satisfactory results on the whole. For further progress, however, efforts to reinforce the rule of law must be maintained, in particular, in respect of cases of high-level corruption and organised crime.
