"Mr President, Commissioner, firstly, I would like to welcome the President of the European Investment Bank (EIB), Werner Hoyer, and to congratulate him on his committed and convincing debut. Following monetary stabilisation, we must now focus fully on real growth in the economy. One of the key aspects of this is the promotion of small and medium-sized enterprises. The EIB supported 115 000 small and medium-sized enterprises in 2010 with funds totalling EUR 10 billion. A credit squeeze nonetheless persists for medium-sized businesses, particularly in the crisis countries and on the periphery of the European Union. We in the European Parliament expect the EIB to do all it can to provide greater support to small and medium-sized enterprises.
We would be interested to learn more about the significance of the guarantees for small and medium-sized enterprises and the options with regard to the Risk Sharing Finance Facility. We also believe it is important that the EIB should play a role in financing infrastructure in the context of the EU project bonds. In summary, we believe that infrastructure, technology and innovation – in short, blue growth – should be at the centre of EIB strategy."@en1
