"Mr President, rising food prices and the increasing cost of living are causing more and more people to seek help. The food aid scheme has been allocated EUR 113 million in 2012. This amount is lower than the previous amount of EUR 500 million. This scheme has reduced the food insecurity of the most deprived persons in the Union. An estimated 43 million people in the European Union are at risk of food poverty, meaning that they cannot afford a proper meal every second day. Many charities and non-governmental organisations around the EU recognise the importance of this programme and its special significance. We therefore need to find a way of continuing this programme without reducing its funding. I have to point out that in Lithuania, social tension is increasing due to dramatically increasing food and heating costs. The reduction in funding for this scheme will further exacerbate the situation for poor and vulnerable families."@en1
