"Mr President, ladies and gentlemen, I wanted to get back quickly to what I think is the most contested issue in the debate we have just had, namely the savings that would ensue by simplifying the number of seats of Parliament. We must not forget that in actual fact there are three seats: Luxembourg, Strasbourg and Brussels.
The efforts we are making with efficiency, such as those contained in the report, and also taking care over the main issue, namely making savings on our expenses, are likely to pale in the eyes of the public unless we truly address the issue of reducing the number of seats. However, we cannot do it if we proceed as we have this evening, announcing a requirement or indicating a goal without using the committees of Parliament to come upwith tangible proposals. Solving this problem is no easy matter, it means working on the Treaty and then having some credible alternatives. This, then, is what we should be concentrating our efforts on."@en1
