"I am particularly invested in the Roadmap for moving to a competitive low-carbon economy in 2050. There is no doubt in my mind about the need to work towards a Europe with lower CO
emissions. In this regard, the Roadmap suggests strategies for the transport, electricity and agricultural sectors, aimed at progressively reducing CO
emissions while maintaining a competitive economy within the global market. However, I will make no secret of the fact that this text has also been at the heart of a deep political disagreement. As is often the case, the left wanted to do more for the climate without taking into consideration the economic reality. They were calling for a revision of the Emissions Trading System so as to make it even more restrictive. This idea would leave our companies in a vulnerable position and I am firmly opposed to it. I am in favour of a more realistic long-term vision than the one our socialist and green comrades are advocating. In the short term, such a revision would make it even more difficult to restart our economy. I believe we need to do more to encourage our companies rather than constantly stigmatising and sanctioning them."@en1
