"Mr President, I voted alongside my group, the ECR, in favour of the motion for a resolution on the sixth World Water Forum. Given that almost half the developing world’s population does not have access to basic sanitation facilities and that 800 million people still use unsafe drinking water, the work of the Forum is extremely valuable internationally. While public health and environmental protection are put forward by the report as the main priorities for water management policy, and rightly so, we welcome the fact that the report also recognises the role that access to clean water plays in securing peace and cooperation in conflict zones, and we support strongly the call for the implementation of international agreements for the shared management of surface waters and ground water that cross international boundaries. This is particularly relevant in the Middle East Peace Process, where adequate water access is a vital political consideration for all the parties concerned."@en1
