"Mr President, for the elections to be truly fair, full access must be granted to all candidates, not just those who the authorities allow to take part. In the same way, the recent presidential elections are neither fair nor democratic. Nevertheless, a majority of the Russian people continue to support Vladimir Putin, now President, and before that, Prime Minister, and before that, President.
The rulers in the Kremlin feel that support but they must realise that a lack of democracy breeds corruption and deprives the citizens of their dignity. Events in North Africa and the Middle East are showing that sooner or later, people will rebel against corruption and will come out on the streets to demand to be treated with respect. The same is true of Russia and the democratic reforms are essential in Russia if future turbulence is to be avoided. Turbulence is different from the recent peaceful demonstrations and I think this is one of the results of these elections."@en1
