"Iceland is a country with a long-standing democracy, and therefore meets all the political criteria for EU membership. In addition to a long tradition of representative democracy, the country also has a judicial system at a very high level and anti-corruption measures and measures that bind ministers and many officials to the use of procedures that minimise conflicts of interest. Many of these policies and measures are at a higher level than those in some current Member States.
Despite a functioning market economy, Iceland has certain discords with the EU in the area of trade. Specifically, these concern the protection of fisheries in Iceland. Many observers argue that the country’s EU membership is conditional precisely on fishing. The problem is not whaling, which is banned in the EU, but the general nature of the country, which is based on this sector. It is because of the nature of the country that this expansion must be approached in a proper manner. I fully support the entry of Iceland and I firmly believe that Iceland will succeed in overcoming the obstacles relating to the common fisheries policy (CFP)."@en1
