lpv:translated text	"Once again, we are led to defend the working conditions of an entire sector. I would remind you that cocoa is one of the primary materials most in demand internationally, after coffee and sugar, and most of the added value in the production chain goes to the countries of the North. Out of the overall production costs of a bar of chocolate, less than 5% goes to the countries of the South. The major chocolate manufacturers would therefore appear to have forgotten that they are wholly dependent on the millions of small-scale cocoa producers. Moreover, the International Labour Organisation estimates that 215 million children around the world are obliged to work, with over 250 000 of them working in West Africa’s cocoa plantations, while 15 000 have been reduced to a state of slavery. The reason is simple: as they are unable to make a profit from their activity, the producers are forced to look for cheap labour. We must therefore demand of the Commission effective legislation to combat the forced labour of children in the cocoa sector and to put pressure on all of the players in the supply chain to ensure that the farmers are able to obtain equitable returns from their activity."@en1
