"Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES) is an initiative established by the European Commission (EU) and the European Space Agency (ESA) in 1998. This programme has attained decisive importance for monitoring the Earth. The data generated offer an insight into pollution and climate change, and can be used in preventing disasters and promoting security. The current uncertainty over the future of the programme and how it is to be financed could entail a significant disadvantage for Europe. I voted in favour of the resolution because I also believe that the GMES programme represents real value for money and that Europe can only benefit from this."@en1
