"Hungary has recently approved a new constitution, which was passed by a large majority in its Parliament. This document, which supersedes the previous communist constitution of 1949, also acknowledges the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union. With this vote, we stress that there is no threat to democracy in Hungary. Each Member State, in fact, has the sovereign power to draft its own constitution and this principle corresponds to the sovereignty of its people from the perspective of self-determination through democracy. It is to be hoped that the Hungarian Government will work closely with the European Commission to ensure that new national legislation conforms with EU law and, if necessary, to introduce changes. Despite this, there is no threat to democracy in Hungary."@en1
